If you happen to fashion or fancy yourself a writer, then November is a good time to buckle down and write.   Whether you write fiction, non-fiction, or academic scholarship, the month is now a kind of dedicated experiment in writing:  a 30 day writing productivity drive!  The general idea is to set yourself a writing goal. Then make it public via a social media community and periodically share your progress as the month wears on.  …A sort of global writing club meant to inspire and motivate.

This conception gained its early momentum with NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) – an initiative designed to turn the whole of November into a month-long write-fest for current or would-be novelists. As a member of this year’s NaNoWriMo, you can set yourself the task of writing 50 thousand words in November alone and bingo, you’ve got yourself a whole big chunk of novel!

A similar idea was soon applied to scholarly writing.  Academics are now invited to join AcWriMo (Academic Writing Month).  This initiative caters to the specific needs of academic writers at all stages of their career (from undergrads to the most distinguished of professors). It’s hosted by PhD2Published which dedicates posts about academic writing and shares literally thousands of tips via Twitter.   AcWriMo offers support, encouragement, and a good old-fashioned kick in the pants.  What are some of the possible positive outcomes of participating?  -A valuable support network for your writing practice, -the chance to build better writing habits for the future, and -maybe, just maybe, a project closer to completion.

Sign up!  Write everyday.  Give yourself an early holiday gift….
